BORNIT® Cold Sealing Compound
2-component, permanently elastic polysulfide based jointing material, can be poured-on, self-leveling, cold workable, for sealing horizontal joints in buildings, civil engineering and  roadway construction, for expansion joints up to 25% of the joint width, suitable for concrete and asphalt joints. Priming is required, depending on conditions, either with BORNIT® Concrete Primer or BORNIT® Asphalt Primer. Tested in  compliance with DIN EN 14188-2.

Characteristics
    
BORNIT®-cold sealing compound is a double-component substance on a polysulphide base, which is used to seal joints according to DIN DIN EN 14 188-2.
It is used in the case of elongation of up to 25% of the width of the joint and is distinguished by its very high resistance to weather conditions and ageing. BORNIT®-cold sealing compound is ready to pour, it is self-levelling and it remains elastic.
BORNIT® - cold sealing compound is tested and external quality controlled on chemical resistance in accordance with ZTV Fug-StB 01


Area of use    
BORNIT®-cold sealing compound is used to seal horizontal contraction joints in concrete and bitumen surfaces, as well as to seal metal joints. It is suitable for sealing into the joints between concrete and bitumen surfaces in those cases where these areas are mechanically loaded by cars, pedestrians or temperature changes. In connection with the use of BORNIT®-Asphalt primer or BORNIT®-Concrete primer and the correct adjustment of the joints, horizontal contraction joints on various surfaces in building, civil engineering and road construction can not only be sealed long-term, but they also become watertight.
BORNIT®-cold sealing compound can be used on joints with a maximum gradient of 3%.
Joints with a greater slope or vertical joints should be sealed with BORNIT®- Cold Joint Sealant. BORNIT®-cold sealing compound is not suitable for joints that are permanently under the surface of liquids, i. e. purification plants and swimming pools or that are exposed to strong and/or oxidising acids (i. e. nitric acid) and leaching. Joints in plants for the containment, handling and filling of substances hazardous to water have to be sealed with a sealant approved by the building authorities.

Handling

In concrete joints
 
The surface of the sealed joints have to be cleaned of dirt, dust, grease, loose particles, the remains of plaster and other similar impurities.
In order to achieve the right sealing depth and to avoid a three-flank-bonding the joint has to be backfilled with an appropriate non-porous material (i.e. PE-round profile, closed cell). If this is impossible the joint ground has to be covered with a separating material (PE-foil, silicone paper). At chamfered building parts the chamfer is not allowed to be covered. The primer has to be applied on dry subsoil and has to flash off.
The internal side surfaces (mortises) of the contraction joints are primed using BORNIT®- Concrete primer.
Components A and B are thoroughly mixed and the priming solution is uniformly applied using a brush. After it has dried (a period of 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the temperature), the sealing substance may be poured. The bonding primer should not be completely dry. If the sealing is carried out more than 24 hours later, the bonding primer must be reapplied

In bitumen joints    
the surface must be primed using BORNIT®-Asphalt primer.
The bitumen joints must be freshly cut; otherwise there may be problems with the gripping properties. Components A and B are thoroughly mixed and the priming solution is uniformly applied using a brush. After it has dried (a minimum of 6 hours) the sealing substance may be poured. The binding primer should not be completely dry and usually the sealing substance is applied on the next day. In that case, it is necessary to verify whether a water film has formed on the surface of the bonding primer by exceeding the dew point.

BORNIT®-cold sealing compound is supplied in various containers. Component B is added to component A using a mixer until the colour shade is solid and without smudges. In order to prevent the formation of blisters, it is necessary to ensure that no air is mixed into the substance.
The sealing substance is then poured into the joint, during which it levels itself out. If any air bubbles appear, they can be removed during the period, in which the substance remains workable, by lightly wiping the surface. The temperature of the sealing substance during sealing must be at least +10°C. The temperature of the base must not fall below +5°C. Up to full capacity a curing time of at least 48 hours at 20 ° C soil and material temperature must be maintained.

Storage    
When stored in a dry place, at a temperature under +25°C and in the original, closed containers, the storage period is 12 months.

Waste disposal    
Only empty containers may be disposed of. Product waste from components A + B is disposed of according to AVV-ASN: 080406 (glues and insulation materials, free of halogenated solvents).
