Tar
Tar is modified resin produced primarily from the wood and roots of pine by destructive distillation under pyrolysis. It is a viscous black liquid. Production and trade in tar was a major contributor in the economies of Northern Europe and Colonial America.
Its main use was in preserving wooden vessels against rot.
The largest user was the Royal Navy. Demand for tar declined with the advent of iron and steel ships.

Petroleum
Petroleum (L. petroleum, from Greek πετρέλαιον, literally "rock oil") or crude oil is a naturally occurring, flammable liquid consisting of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons of various molecular weights, and other organic compounds, that are found in geologic formations beneath the earth's surface.

The term "petroleum" was first used in the treatise De Natura Fossilium, published in 1546 by the German mineralogist Georg Bauer, also known as Georgius Agricola.
