detailed information
Areas of application
BORNIT® Renovation Plaster is used for remedial treatment of soaked and salt-damaged masonry in rooms with high air humidity (basement, kitchen, etc.); as plaster following waterproofing with the BORNIT® Basement Coating System; as plaster following horizontal waterproofing against rising moisture; as breathable, water-repellent and thermally insulating interior and exterior plaster. Not suitable for waterproofing against pressing water. Since splash water or accumulated snow can act like pressurised water, waterproof plaster is recommended for exterior application in the lower base area (up to approx. 30 cm above ground surface).
Type and properties
BORNIT® Renovation Plaster is a pressure-resistant, salt-resistant, water-repellent plaster with good processing properties. With the use of BORNIT® Renovation Plaster, moist and highly salt-contaminated substrates can dry out without damages. Due to its water repellency and its high pore content, BORNIT® Renovation Plaster is water-repellent, prevents the formation of condensate and has a thermally insulating and desalinating effect.

Product advantages
· Fast, uncomplicated mixing
· Stable, also with higher layer thicknesses
· Easy to process
· Manual and machine processing
· Economical and cost-cutting, due to low equipment and material costs and effort
· Can be applied in single or multiple layers
Substrate
For masonry reconstruction, first, the existing plaster must be removed, the joints scraped out about 2 cm deep, and a salt treatment performed with BORNIT® Anti Sulphate. Subsequently, the masonry must be provided with a max. 50 % covering rough cast of BORNIT® Renovation Plaster or of BORNIT® Renovation Plaster plus added BORNIT® Stick Emulsion (30 % to the mixing water) in a retiform manner. Highly absorbent substrates must be pre-moistened.
Mode of action
Due to its water repellency, the renovation plaster does not absorb water. But due to the high air void content, a targeted air/vapour circulation via the plaster layer can be achieved, which results in drying out of the wall material due to water evaporation.
Processing
Processing recommendations:
Mixing:
BORNIT® Renovation Plaster is mixed with water into a processable mortar, wherein, if possible, a compulsory mixer should be used. Per bag (25 kg), approx. 3.8 l of water are required. A mixing duration of about 5 minutes must be complied with.
The plaster is usually applied in two layers with an overall plaster thickness of approx. 2.5 cm; the thickness, however, should be at least 2 cm. After sparging, the renovation plaster is spread with a slat and smoothed. If several plaster layers are applied, the lower layers must be thoroughly roughened immediately after application. As waiting period until application of the next layer, 1 day per mm of plaster thickness has proven to be suitable.
Post-treatment:
In dry weather, with wind and sunshine, follow-up treatment with moistening and possibly also shading may be required. The surface can be designed with an especially structured layer of renovation plaster, with a water-repellent, mineral finishing coat or with mineral paint coats. Water vapour-impermeable layers should not be applied, as e.g. synthetic plasters and vapour-retardant dispersion paints, since the effect of the plaster would thus be restricted.
Old-building renovation, internal and external:
BORNIT® Renovation Plaster would be a very appropriate solution, where a particularly breathable insulating plaster is required, e.g. in wet rooms, basements, kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, bakeries, etc., but also in rooms, which are only occasionally heated or heated only a little, as e.g. churches, holiday homes, toilets, bedrooms, etc. The renovation plaster must be applied in single or multiple layers onto a non-covering rough cast. Correctly applied, BORNIT® Renovation Plaster is also a fully functional exterior plaster according to DIN 18550, part 1.
Application against rising masonry moisture:
Knock off the existing plaster, scrape out crumbly joint mortar and brush it off. Thereafter, treat with BORNIT® Anti Sulphate. Onto the subsequent rough cast of BORNIT® Renovation Plaster with added BORNIT® Stick Emulsion (approx. 10 % to the mixing water), apply the renovation plaster in two layers with a thickness of at least 2.5 cm.
Application against slight capillary moisture:
In case of only slight capillary moisture, the renovation plaster is sufficient. The pre-treatments must be undertaken as with the application against rising moisture.
Application against laterally pressing masonry moisture:
Waterproofing against pressing, flowing water, also if only occurring occasionally, must be undertaken with the BORNIT® Basement Sealing System. A subsequent rough cast results in increased thermal insulation and acts against the formation of condensate.
